Content Summary
This article examines the impact of Memorial University of Newfoundland's medical school on the supply of rural physicians in Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador (NL). The study analyzed data from 1973 to 1998, revealing that graduates with rural backgrounds, those who completed residency at Memorial, and family physicians were more likely to practice in rural areas. The findings suggest that increasing the number of rural students and encouraging postgraduate training in family medicine could enhance the rural physician workforce. The study highlights the university's significant role in addressing rural healthcare needs.
