The Canadian Journal of Rural Medicine (CJRM) is a quarterly peer-reviewed journal available in print and online. It is the first rural medical journal in the world indexed in Index Medicus and in the MEDLINE/PubMed databases.
CJRM promotes research into rural health issues, supports the health of rural and remote communities, informs rural practitioners, provides a forum for debate and discussion, shares practical clinical information, and influences rural health policy by publishing articles that inform decision-makers.
Above all, CJRM content must be authentically rural.
Material in the following categories will be considered for publication. Only Original Articles require an abstract.
Research studies in rural medicine (3,500 words or less) with a formal abstract.
This is the core of our work and mission. Research should be conducted in one, or preferably several, rural communities and address a hypothesis relevant to CJRM readers.
A concise case centered on a cardiogram and its interpretation.
The case may be rural primarily because of its origin, but the writing should focus on the cardiogram and its interpretation.
A report of an interesting rural case (1,500 words or less).
The report should include a clear rural dimension, particularly in the description and management of the case.
Written permission from the subject is strongly encouraged. CJRM can provide suggested permission language, or authors may use their own.
A formal systematic literature review of a rural medicine topic (3,500 words or less).
Reviews should be formal and authoritative rather than essays based on selected references.
A reproducible literature search and criteria-based selection of relevant articles are required. Collaboration with other authors, or prior publishing experience on the topic, is encouraged.
The interpretation of the literature must apply rural values and realities to support the conclusions.
Illustrated practical procedural articles relevant to rural practice (2,000 words or less).
These articles should present a rural physician's practical approach, supported by a focused number of references and a strong selection of illustrations or photographs.
All photographed subjects should provide a release. CJRM can provide suggested language if needed.
A rural physician's opinion on a matter of personal passion and interest to the broader rural medical readership (1,000 words or less).
The author's personal commitment to the topic and its rural context should be evident in the writing.
A short review of a book of interest to the rural medical readership (500 words or less).
Articles must be unpublished and 500 words or less.
Upload articles through CJRM's submission portal at review.jow.medknow.com/cjrm.
Submit the manuscript under “letters” and state in the cover letter that it is intended for the Student/Resident's Page.
Please note that accepted articles may take a year or more to appear, although publication can be considerably faster. Clinical articles are given preference.
Communication of best practices that work in a rural community and may have broader application (1,000 words or less).
CJRM is looking for a locally adopted protocol or program that works for your community and could be useful elsewhere.
Artists should be Canadian, and submitted artwork must have a rural theme.
Artwork should have proportions suitable for the CJRM cover when scaled down. Wide horizontal pieces, long vertical pieces, and double panels are not suitable.
Most other artwork can be considered, provided it demonstrates a good level of artistic competence. Submission does not guarantee acceptance.
Canadian Medical Association, the executive and membership of the Society of Rural Physicians of Canada, and the Rural and Remote Area Medicine Conferences' directors.
Planning began in 1994, and a publishing agreement was concluded with the CMA in November 1995.
The Call-For-Papers was published in CMAJ in December 1995, and the first issue appeared on June 1, 1996.
Our Associate Editor, Suzanne Kingsmill, is a professional writer and editor, and our editorial board includes individuals with wide-ranging research experience.
Although this combined experience is broad, the details of starting up a new journal have been many, and the learning curve steep.
CJRM scores several “firsts.”
It is the first Canadian journal to focus exclusively on rural medicine. It is the first in Canada to be produced “from the field” by rural physicians themselves, and be distributed nationally.
It is innovative in publishing simultaneously in print and on the internet, and it attempts something unusual in medical publishing — to combine a scholarly medical journal with non-medical general interest material.
Illustrations should be supplied in JPG, EPS, TIFF, or GIF format at a minimum resolution of 300 dpi. For a 10 × 15 cm image, this generally means using a 2-megapixel or better camera.
Do not correct colour or contrast, as the printer will handle those adjustments. Do not include text or captions inside the image.
When cropping an image, save it at the highest quality and lowest compression. Do not scan artwork or reduce photo resolution unless this is disclosed in the cover letter and high-resolution or camera-ready copies will also be provided.
Written permission must be provided for previously published material, illustrations that identify human subjects, and any person named in the Acknowledgements or cited as the source of a Personal Communication.
